University of Connecticut Libraries

Joseph W. Scott

I am the Assistant Music Librarian at the Music and Dramatic Arts Library. My principal responsibilities include creation and maintenance of database records for scores and recordings in HOMER, the on-line catalog of UConn libraries holdings. HOMER can also be reached from the University of Connecticut Libraries home page.

I coordinate with the Preservation Department at Homer Babbidge Library to have new items made physically ready for use, and older ones repaired. I also assist with reference service and administrative duties. My office is room L201E on the second floor of the Music Library.

My training and experience include an A.B. from Brown University, 1971, where I majored in music, an M.S.L.S. from Simmons College, 1972, and four years as the Music Librarian at Connecticut College, 1972-1976. I have served in my current position since 1976. I hold memberships in the Music Library Association, 1972-, the New England Chapter, Music Library Association (N.E.M.L.A.), 1972-, and the Music OCLC Users Group, 1976-.

On the personal side, I am a devotee of choral music, both sacred and secular. I am a member of the South Congregational First Baptist Church Chancel Choir (New Britain, CT) (1992-). I have sung regularly with CONCORA, the Connecticut Choral Artists, a New Britain based professional choir, since 1990, and performed as a member of the CONCORA Consort since 1999. Recent highlights have included performances of Bach's B Minor Mass, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and a concert appearance with Bobby McFerrin. I have participated in recording projects with both groups which resulted in the issuing of compact discs. I was a founding member of the Hartford, CT based Woodland Scholars and sang with that professional chamber choir for its first two seasons (1993-1995). In the past, I have, over the years, joined singers in UConn's Music Department for concerts of choral music. I also have an interest in Suzuki violin pedagogy, having been a "Suzuki Dad" to my daughter Jennifer early in her musical career.
