RESOLUTION ON THE ARCTRIC NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

We, the United States/Urban/Rural Mission Contact Group of the World Council of Churches, join with the Gwitch'in Athabascan and many other concerned Peoples in adamantly opposing all forms of oil, gas, and mineral "development," including exploration in the Alaska National Wildlife Refge (ANWR).

We strong urge that ecumenical bodies, churches, organizations and individuals join us in insisting that the Congress and the President of the United States take imnmediate action to insure that ANWR be permanently protected in its pristine state, and tha t energy policies based on conservation, recycling and the development of renewable resources be energetically pursued as alternatives to any further environmentally or culturally destructive forms of energy "development."

Adopted on this 12th day of January, 1991 in Kansas City, Missouri.
