Paintings by Deborah Muirhead
The Library is proud to present an exhibit of the paintings of Deborah Muirhead, Associate Professor in the School of Fine Arts. The works in this exhibit are in response to the discovery and excavation of an 18th century African-American burial ground in Manhattan. "The layered surfaces of these paintings veil fragmented spectral images beneath the surface. They invite the viewer to explore, but they resist giving up all of these secrets ... I use text fragments to weave stories onto the image. These provide some facts, but also offer no obvious answers."
