His & Hers: New Yorker Cartoons by Michael Maslin and Liza DonnellyDodd Research Center West Corridor Michael Maslin (UConn BFA '76) has been drawing cartoons for the New Yorker since 1977. He is the author of four collections of cartoons, including Mixed Company, and with his wife and fellow New Yorker cartoonist Liza Donnelly, of two books, Husbands & Wives and Call Me When you Reach Nirvana. Liza Donnelly has been a cartoonist with the New Yorker since 1979. She has written and illustrated seven children's books. Her book, Funny Ladies: The New Yorker's Greatest Women Cartoonists and Their Cartoons (2005), will be followed in 2008 by Sex and Sensibility: Ten Women Examine the Lunacy of Love in 200 Cartoons. Maslin and Donnelly met and married while working at the New Yorker in the 1980s. They work independently, each with a unique sysle, offering entertaining and sharp observations on social relationships. Their exhibit continues into the spring of 2008 when the artists will visit UConn to speak about their work and about working for the New Yorker (date TBA). The cartoons shown this fall will be replaced with new work in January. Maslin and Donnelly live in Rhinebeck, New York. For more information about them, see www.michaelmaslin.com and www.lizadonnelly.com.
Don't miss "Our Lives & Hard Times," a lively, informal conversation with Liza Donnelly and Michael Maslin (UConn '76) about their careers at the New Yorker and about their lives together as husband and wife, facilitated by UConn faculty member and author Regina Barreca. Their exchange will touch on creating cartoons, raising children - and pets, publishing books, the history of cartooning, and anything else that pops up in the course of the event. Liza's most recent books, Sex and Sensibility: Ten Women Examine the Lunacy of Modern Love in 200 Cartoons (2008) and Funny Ladies: the New Yorker's Greatest Women Cartoonists and Their Cartoons (2005), along with Regina Barreca's recent books, will be on sale. Sunday, April 20, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Book sale/signing and reception to follow. Konover Auditorium, Dodd Research Center.
