Marc Simmons of Hartford, Connecticut, is a self-taught artist who works as an accountant by day and paints by night. He has been painting for 18 years but only within the last 3 years has he begun to exhibit his work. Winner of the Kuriansky Foundation Award at the 16th Annual Faber Birren National Color Award Show, Mr. Simmons has exhibited at the Boulder Valley Art Council in Colorado, the Ashwell Gallery in Beverly, Massachusetts, and the New Britain Museum of American Art in Connecticut. He is currently showing at the Frank J. Miele Gallery in New York, a gallery which specializes in exhibiting the works of self-taught artists. While viewing the exhibit in the Homer Babbidge Library, pay close attention to the dates for each piece, for chronological order is useful in demonstrating Mr. Simmons' development in terms of style and technique. For instance, his first painting, The Accountant: Picture Essays in Multiplicity will be included in the show as well as Rabbit by the Sea and Giraffe and Child, which were early attempts at painting the human figure.
