Dodd Center Staff Looks to UConn Community For Ideas on Programs and Directions

Thomas Wilsted
Director, Dodd Research Center

As the new director of the Dodd Research Center, I want to thank the staff, faculty, and friends of the University for their warm welcome. I received many e-mail messages, notes, and visitors welcoming me to the library and the campus. This has made the adjustment to a new job and a new environment easier and I thank everyone for their support, their words of advice, and their friendliness.

Becoming director of any new venture is an awesome responsibility--even more daunting when, like the Dodd Center, that enterprise has been widely publicized, has a history of strong research collections, and has begun its new life with an outstanding series of public events. However, I am excited to be a member of the Dodd Center and University Libraries staff and to help provide leadership for the future.

Over the next few months, Dodd Center staff will conduct searches for permanent staff, develop policies and procedures, and chart future directions for the Center. These organizational activities are particularly important in view of the University Libraries' implementation of its strategic plan. Our goals are to build a program that preserves the University's archives and special collections; makes them available to students, faculty, and scholars; and provides a facility for public programming. We expect to provide high quality services that meet our users' needs.

There are many ways to approach such goals. As we begin our discussions, the staff welcomes input from its many stakeholders: faculty, students, staff, donors, and the community of scholars and others who have an interest in our programs. If you have comments, recommendations, or suggestions regarding the Dodd Center, please contact one of the staff or me. We can all be reached at 486-4500; my e-mail address is tom.wilsted@lib.uconn.edu.
