Emeritus professor of art Paul J. Zelanski recently donated a major collection of posters to the Libraries. Assembled during 1988-1991, the collection of more than 1000 posters documents work exhibited at the Warsaw Poster Biennial, a pre-eminent international venue for poster art, during that period. Accordingly, the majority deal directly or indirectly with political events that occurred in eastern Europe as the Soviet empire collapsed. The balance of the collection focuses on the theatre, musical performances, and film, and originated in Western European countries, the United States, and Japan. More than 100 graphic designers from 22 countries are represented in the collection. The posters reflect the interconnections among visual artists and provide examples of various printing processes and printing papers. Because it documents a critical period in recent history, the collection will be of interest not only to visual artists but also to political scientists and historians as well. The collection is housed in Archives & Special Collections in the Dodd Center. For more information, contact Thomas Jacoby: 486-2787; or thomas.jacoby@uconnvm.uconn.edu.
