U-DOC, a library pilot project to test the effectiveness and economics of self-service document delivery, is underway in cooperation with faculty and post-doctoral fellows from the School of Engineering and the Institute of Materials Sciences. The project allows participants to request needed journal articles directly from a commercial vendor without intervention by library staff. If the service proves to be effective and economical, U-DOC will be expanded to additional members of the university community in 1997.
The vendor's database contains tens of thousands of journal articles, conference proceedings, and other materials and can now be searched by anyone with an Internet connection (www.ebscodoc.com). There is no charge for searching the database, but those who are not formally associated with the pilot project will be billed directly by the vendor if they request documents or other services. When fully implemented, U-DOC will have important advantages: users will see citations for desired materials, journals held by the University Libraries will be identified, and a special discount rate will apply to any documents ordered.
