Recent Acquisitions in Archives & Special Collections

Significant new additions to the holdings of personal or professional papers in Archives & Special Collections include: the professional papers of John C. Greene, professor emeritus in the History of Science; the papers of Foster Gunnison, Jr., advocate of gay rights and smokers rights, railroad enthusiast, and devotee of barber shop quartet singing; the papers of exiled German philosopher Joachim Schumacher; and those of Richard P. Smith documenting his World War II experiences and service as mayor of West Hartford.

Holdings on Connecticut business enterprise have been enriched by two major acquisitions: the records of the E. E. Dickinson Company of Essex, manufacturer of Dickinson's Witch Hazel; and the records of the Hartford Electric Light Company. The extensive body of records in Archives & Special Collections on the New Haven Railroad have been supplemented by the acquisition of the papers of maintenance engineer William E. Parry and records of the Central New England Railway, a company that was taken over by the New Haven.

Holdings in the Archives of Pioneers in Survey Research have been augmented by the acquisition of the papers of Samuel Lubell, who introduced the concept that American political parties were based upon coalitions of identifiable streams of voters; and Elmo Roper, who was among the first to apply modern sampling techniques to national political polling. Other important acquisitions include the Bardacke - Fuller Papers which document the history of the Dymaxion Dwelling Machine Company founded by R. Buckminster Fuller; the papers of Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian Alliance of Connecticut; the Gerald Tirozzi Connecticut Desegregation Collection; and the Paul J. Zelanski Poster Collection.

Additions to existing collections include: new material from the American Association of University Women, Connecticut Chapter; the Connecticut Citizens Action Group; and World Federalists, Mansfield, Connecticut Chapter; the papers of former senator Thomas J. Dodd, nurse-historian Josephine A. Dolan, emigre scientist and faculty member Walter Landauer, and union activist Ralph J. Pancallo; and the records of the Bristol Brass Company. Materials constantly flow in from University departments and schools.

Noteworthy additions have been made to the University's archives for: the Child Development Laboratories, the University Research Foundation, the School of Business, the Board of Trustees, the Division of Athletics, the Honors Program, and the University Photographs Collection.

Major acquisitions to the Northeast Children's Literature Collection include: a collection of Richard Scarry drawings; and the papers of authors and illustrators Eleanor Estes, Nonny Hogrogrian, Clayton Knight, Esphyr Slobodkina, and Joseph A. Smith. Additions were also made to the papers of poets Bill Berkson and Marilyn Waniek and author William K. Costley.

Holdings of archives and manuscripts in the Dodd Research Center increased by some 970 linear feet during the 1996 calendar year. Total volume for archives and manuscripts collections is now approximately 17,000 linear feet.
