New Acquisitions in Archives & Special Collections

The following research collections have been acquired recently by Archives & Special Collections and are housed in the Dodd Research Center.

AFL-CIO Northeast Region
The George Meany Labor Archives has arranged for the AFL-CIO Northeast Region to transfer its inactive records to the Dodd Center. Covering the period 1958-1995, and including union activities in the six New England states, these records reflect the programs of state, regional, and local labor councils as well as programs of regional significance.

James Flora
A Connecticut resident since 1942, award-winning artist James Flora has donated the artwork for five of his children's books to the Northeast Children's Literature Collection. Among his works is The Fabulous Firework Family. This remake of a book first printed in 1955 was inspired by his first visit to Mexico. It recounts the tale of a family of Fireworks makers in brilliantly colored drawings. Other titles include: Little Hatchy Hen, The Day the Cow Sneezed, My Friend Charlie, and Leopold, the See-Through Crumbpicker.

Loretta Krupinski
Trained at the Syracuse University School of Art, Loretta Krupinski is a contemporary marine artist who became a children's author and illustrator. She began her career as an editorial illustrator for Newsday but soon began working full time writing and illustrating children's books. Her collection in the Northeast Children's Literature Collection includes illustrations from all her books: A New England Scrapbook, Bluewater Journal: The Voyage of the Sea Tiger, and Heidi. Ms. Krupinski is a fellow in the American Society of Marine Artists and her books have won the "Children's Choice Award" from the International Reading Association/Children's Book Council.

Jean Day Zallinger
Known primarily for illustrating children's natural history books, Jean Zallinger has donated drawings and artwork for more than twenty of her books to the Northeast Children's Literature Collection. Trained at the Massachusetts College of Art and the Yale School of Art and Architecture, Zallinger began illustrating children's books in 1957. Some of the titles in her recent donation include: Biography of a Leaf, The Earliest Americans, The Moon of the Owls, The Natural History of the Tail, Sea Creatures Do Amazing Things, and Water Boatman's Journey.
