Peter Leavitt, 85 years young, has worked as a volunteer in the Art and Design Library for 14 years. It is rare to find a volunteer so dedicated and energetic; Peter comes to the library three days a week, even when New England weather would make it easier to stay home. After retiring from a career designing and manufacturing decorative fabrics, Peter answered a call from the library for a volunteer to organize a special collection of Turkish books. He was born in Turkey and was familiar with the language. "I only knew some Turkish, but they were happy to have me do this work," Peter says. His work made the collection available for historical research.
Today, Peter assists in the organization of the library's collection of over 12,000 art auction catalogs from such notable houses as Sotheby's and Christie's. Using these hard-to-find catalogs is often the only way a person can trace the history of an art object that might be part of a personal collection half way around the world. Peter has added significant value to the Art and Design Library's holdings by organizing this wealth of historical information, and his special talents are deeply appreciated. "Volunteering at this library has always been a positive experience for me," he says with a smile.
