Library Staff News

Fang Fang Gu, formerly multimedia librarian and head of the at the University of Mississippi Library, has joined the staff of Access Services as Culpeper media services librarian. She holds Master's degrees in Library and Information Science and in Computer-Assisted Instruction from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
Pamela Heath-Johnston is the new assistant to the vice chancellor for organizational and staff development. She comes to the library from the Hartford Graduate Center, where she served as director of training and education for the Connecticut Quality Council. Prior to that, she was employed at UConn as the university's training coordinator and the administrator for campus continuous quality improvement efforts.
Scott McEathron has joined the staff of Collections Services as map catalog librarian and liaison for natural resources. Formerly, he was employed as administrative specialist/associate academic librarian for the American Geographical Society Collection at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Laura Katz Smith will join the staff of the Dodd Center on April 1 as curator of business, railroads, labor and immigration collections. Ms. Smith comes to the University Libraries from the Special Collections Department of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute Libraries where she served as manuscripts curator.

Library Recognizes Staff Service

The University Libraries celebrated "Employee Recognition Week" on February 4 with a reception to honor all library staff, but particularly those celebrating significant anniversaries this year. Mary Ann Davison received congratulations from Deborah Stansbury Sunday and Brinley Franklin on her decade of service to the Avery Point Campus Library. The following staff were honored at the reception:

Beverley Manning, University Librarian III, Trecker Library, Greater Hartford Campus (30 years) Bev holds both Bachelor's and Master's degrees from SUNY-Albany. After many years as a technical services librarian and temporary service as the acting director of the Trecker Library, she made the transition to a reference and instructional librarian in 1997-98. Bev is an active member of the Connecticut Library Association, the New England Technical Services Librarians, and the Capital Region Library Council.

Mary Briggs, University Library Assistant II, Collections Services (25 years). For many years, Mary was responsible for maintaining control over newly received and uncataloged materials as they moved through processing. Now that most new materials arrive pre-processed by a vendor, she has assumed responsibilities as a copy cataloger and project work for the Cataloging Team.

Barbara Lott, University Librarian II, Trecker Library, Greater Hartford Campus (20 years). Barbara earned her Bachelor's degree from Penn State and a Master's degree in Library Science from Simmons College. She worked in the Special Collections Department, the Library Orientation and Information Services Department, and the Research and Information Services Department before transferring to the Trecker Library. Barbara has served on many library and university teams and committees and managed the library's services for individuals with disabilities for many years. Barbara has been active in the New England Library Association, the Connecticut Library Association, and other professional organizations.

Nancy Orth, Head, Access Services (20 years). Nancy came to the UConn Libraries with a Masters degree from Brown University in Slavic Languages and Literature and after teaching at both the high school level and at Brown University, Boston College, and UConn. Starting as a University Library Assistant I, she has held positions as a bibliographic searcher, OCLC cataloger, and department head for the Circulation/Reserve Department. Since 1996 she has served as head of Access Services and as a member of the Libraries' Leadership Council. Nancy is active in national professional organizations, particularly as they deal with document delivery, electronic course reserve, and library systems issues.

Meredith Petersons, University Library Assistant III, Research and Information Services, (15 years). Meredith holds a BFA from UConn in Drama. She began her employment here in the Library Orientation and Instructional Services Department and has continued as a member of Research & Information Services. In addition to her work at the Information Desk, she is involved with the design and production of library publications, surveys, and signs; and serves on the library's USER Team.

David Avery, University Library Assistant II, Research and Information Services (10 years). Dave earned his Bachelor's degree from UConn in History and joined the library staff as a student assistant while still an undergraduate. After joining the staff full time as a Processing Section Assistant, Dave managed the Connecticut documents collection. He continues to serve at the Information Desk, as a student supervisor and as the collection manager for the reference collection. He is an active participant in library teams and represents the Libraries at the Connecticut Documents Roundtable.

Mary Ann Davison, University Library Assistant III, Avery Point Campus (10 years). Mary Ann holds a Bachelor's degree from Southern Connecticut State University and has done graduate work at the University of Vermont and Southern Connecticut. She performs a variety of both public and technical service functions at the Avery Point Library and is professionally active in the New England Library Support Staff Association and in UCPEA.

Deborah Schultz, University Library Assistant III, Collections Services (10 years). Debby joined the UConn Libraries in 1990 as a floor monitor, quickly becoming proficient at organizing and shifting collections. She also has been a staff sharer at the Information Desk. Debby's current responsibility is the management of level 2 collections and the corps of student workers who assist her in this task.

William Uricchio, University Associate Librarian & Administrative/Public Services Librarian, Trecker Library, Greater Hartford Campus (10 years). Bill earned his Bachelor's degree at Central Connecticut State University and holds Master's degrees from both UConn and the University of Rhode Island. He joined the staff as head of Bibliographic Control in 1988, having previously been employed by the Capitol Region Library Council and the West Hartford Public Library. In 1996, Bill became coordinator for networked information and curator in the Dodd Research Center; in 1998 he assumed administrative responsibility for the Harleigh B. Trecker Library. Bill has published and presented for many library publications and professional organizations.
