Brinley R. Franklin, associate director for administrative services since joining the University Libraries in 1990, was promoted to director of library services effective January 1, 1999. In addition to his earlier administrative responsibilities for budget, personnel and planning, he will now have an expanded role in overseeing the Libraries' service operations. A native of the Washington, DC area, Brinley earned his Bachelor's degree in American Studies and a Master of Library Science degree from the University of Maryland at College Park. He also holds an MBA degree in Information Systems Management from George Washington University. Brinley began his library career as a high school student worker for the Prince George's County Memorial Library and as an undergraduate student worker at the University of Maryland's McKeldin Library. After receiving his library science degree, he was employed as head librarian in Coopers and Lybrand's Washington, DC office before becoming head librarian in the Washington office of KPMG Peat Marwick. Upon receiving his MBA degree, Brinley transferred to Peat Marwick's higher education consulting practice, where he performed work for many of the nation's leading research universities. Specializing in library cost studies, he has served as consultant to more than thirty universities, including Harvard Medical School, Stanford University, the University of Chicago, Duke University, Vanderbilt University, Emory University, Georgetown University, the University of Michigan, the University of Washington, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Virginia. Brinley is an active member of a number of professional associations, including: the Association of Research Libraries, the Association of College and Research Libraries, the Library Administration and Management Association, and the International Federation of Library Associations. His publications include journal articles on various topics related to academic library administration.
