African National Congress Archivist Interning At the Dodd Center

Xolani Malawana, an archivist from the African National Congress(ANC) Archives in Johannesburg, South Africa, is currently an intern in Archives & Special Collections at the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center. Mr. Malawana's visit is part of an expanding relationship between the ANC and the University of Connecticut. During his internship Mr. Malawana will pursue a number of projects designed to expand his archival knowledge and skills. Projects under discussion include support for the ANC in organizing its archives, accummulated during the the struggle for freedom in South Africa; creation of an oral history program to record interviews with ANC leaders; and a workshop for museum and archival leaders to discuss the preservation of cultural heritage collections in South Africa. The latter project will be done in conjuction with Michigan State University. A delegation from the University of Connecticut, including chancellor Mark Emmert, vice-provost Robert Smith, ANC project director Amii Omara-Otunnu, and Dodd Center director Thomas Wilsted, will visit South Africa in early March.
