Kennelly Papers Donated to UConn

Congresswomen Barbara Kennelly, the first woman to serve as vice chair of the House Democratic Caucus,to serve on the House Committee on Intelligence, and as chief deputy majority whip, has donated her congressional papers to the University of Connecticut. In the 105th Congress, Ms. Kennelly also served as the ranking member of the Subcommittee on Social Security; she will continue to serve as counselor to the Commissioner of Social Security Administration.

Prior to her election to Congress, Ms. Kennelly was Secretary of the State of Connecticut and a member of the Hartford Court of Common Council. A long-time advocate for children, Ms. Kennelly has worked for child protection programs, foster care and adoption assistance, and health care for children.

Barbara Kennelly represented the First District of Connecticut from 1982 until 1998, when she ran unsuccessfully against John Rowland for Governor of Connecticut. Her congressional papers consist of 72 cubic feet of materials, including correspondence, reports, news clippings, press releases, speeches, committee and issue files, and audio-visual materials. The collection will be placed in the University Libraries' Archives & Special Collections in the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center. A public announcement will be made when the papers have been organized and made available for research.
