Barbara Cervera, Reference/Liaison Librarian Research & Information Services
In August, the familiar screens of both the HOMER workstations and the popular SuperHOMERS will change as new, state-of the-art integrated library system software is implemented. The UConn Libraries has contracted with Endeavor Information Systems, Inc. of Des Plaines, Illinois to purchase a suite of fully integrated software products. Endeavor's Voyager software provides functionality for creating and maintaining the library's 1.5 million record bibliographic database and enables access to it through the online catalog interface. Acquisitions and serials control, fund accounting, cataloging, and circulation operations will also be supported with Voyager. Citation Server software will provide access to commercial databases and full-text sources. A web interface will provide access from within the libraries or from remote locations to the online catalog and other databases. Users will be able to point and click their way through a variety of electronic resources including online catalogs, full-text and citation databases that are locally mounted or remotely accessed. Help will be readily available online. Staff working with Voyager will utilize a Windows-based graphical user interface that is easy to use, highly flexible, and very efficient. To support management decision making, the software provides the capability to generate customized reports drawing on any data in the system. Other Endeavor software products will be implemented in subsequent months. Media Booking software will facilitate the scheduling of rooms, equipment, and library materials. Image Server software allows the creation of digital image collections along with bibliographic records that will display in the online catalog and be linked dynamically to the image files they describe. Course reserve functions in Babbidge will go online complementing the popular electronic course reserve capabilities already in use. Patron empowerment features will allow users to check out materials to themselves, place holds on or recall items, check on the status of a hold or recall, or see what materials they have checked out. An Interlibrary Loan product is due in 2000. This new library system software and hardware will be located in Babbidge Library and will replace the mainframe-based NOTIS software that was purchased in 1991. Endeavor software is Unix-based and runs under the Oracle relational database management system. All the Endeavor software and the Sun hardware is certified to be Y2K compliant. The UConn Health Center has also purchased the Endeavor system for its Lyman Maynard Stowe Library. Barbara Cervera, barbara.cervera@uconn.edu.
