Richard Bleiler, reference/liaison librarian in Research & Information Services, was recently reappointed as chair of the American Library Association's Dartmouth Medal Award Committee, a position he has held for three years. Since 1975 the Dartmouth Medal has been given to the best reference work published or made available during the previous year. The winner of the Dartmouth Medal Award for 1999 is the American National Biography from Oxford University Press. With 17,450 biographies written by 6,100 distinguished scholars, the 24-volume work provides a comprehensive examination of the men and women who have shaped the development of the United States.Richard Bleiler is also the author of the 1998 edition of Science Fiction Writers, which provides bio-critical information on 98 science fiction writers.
Silas Escalante, formerly evening/weekend circulation supervisor at California State University Monterey Bay Library Learning Complex, has joined the staff of Access Services as evening supervisor. At Monterey Bay, Silas managed the circulation student employee operation and supervised circulation, course reserves and help desk services. He earned his BA degree at California Lutheran University.
Richard Fyffe, head of Collections Services, is one of fifteen top managers from academic libraries competitively selected to attend the 1999 UCLA Seniors Fellows Program. Since its inception in 1982, 125 academic library leaders have participated in the program. Richard joined the UConn Libraries in 1990 after holding library positions at the Essex Institute and the American Antiquarian Society. He earned his BA and MA in Philosophy at the UConn and an MS at the Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information Science.
David Garnes, reference/liaison librarian in Research & Information Services, is the incoming chair of the American Library Association's Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual Task Force Book Award. Given annually since 1971, the award is the oldest of its kind. Recognition was given this year to Michael Cunningham's The Hours, Farrar Straus & Giroux (literature) and Sarah Schulman's Stagestruck: Theater, AIDS, and the Marketing of Gay America, Duke University Press (non-fiction).
Joseph Natale has joined Access Services as document delivery/shared resources librarian. He has extensive experience in reference and interlibrary loan services at Texas Women's University, where he was active in state organizations concerned with resource sharing among Texas institutions of higher education. In 1996, he received the TWU Outstanding Achievement Award for contributions to the research community through innovative research and technology. Joseph has an MS in Library Science from the University of North Texas and a BA from Southern Methodist.
Walt Woodward is the new assistant to the vice chancellor for marketing and communications. He will be responsible for developing and implementing communications plans for new and evolving library and computing services and will train staff to market services and programs within the university. Walt is completing his PhD in History at UConn and comes to the Libraries after a career as a marketing and advertising executive. His work has earned him numerous Emmy and Obie awards.
