The Zinger

A Mobile is Created for Babbidge Library's New Front Door

The Zinger, a mobile by internationally known architect and sculptor Tim Prentice, has been commissioned by the University Libraries to honor David Kapp, retired associate director for collections & information services. As a member of the library administration from 1972 until his retirement in December 1998, David had key responsibilities for the planning, design and furnishing of the Babbidge Library, the Dodd Center, and other UConn libraries. Through his leadership, many artists have been persuaded to lend or donate their work to the library for public display. David continues to chair the library's Exhibits Committee and to seek new works of art for display in the Libraries' buildings. Tim Prentice, a graduate of the Yale University School of Architecture, lives and works in West Cornwall Connecticut. His work hangs in public spaces and private collections around the world. The Zinger will be installed in January from the 40' high ceiling of Babbidge Library's new north entrance pavilion. Fabricated of translucent Lexan panels strung from a stainless steel superstructure, the 36'-long mobile will descend from the plaza to the street level of the pavilion, moving gently with the air currents in the building. Through the glass walls of the pavilion, The Zinger will be visible from the recently constructed "Academic Way" that now graces the center of campus. The library is seeking donations toward the purchase of this permanent work of art. Funds received in excess of the amount needed for project will be designated for future acquisitions of art for the Libraries. Gifts are tax deductible, and every donation will be acknowledged in writing by the Libraries and the University. Donations of $100 or more will also be acknowledged on a plaque to be placed in the pavilion when the mobile is installed in January 2000. Checks should be made out to the University of Connecticut Foundation, Zinger Project and sent to Esmond Chang, Babbidge Library, U-5A, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT 06269.
