Bob Vrecenak, head of interlibrary loan at the Babbidge Library, retired in late October. Bob worked in the old Wilbur Cross Library during his student years at UConn and accepted his first full time position with the Libraries in October 1974. In his 25 years of dedicated service, Bob built an extraordinary reputation for outstanding personal service to UConn researchers, to libraries across the state and to ILL borrowers wherever they might be. Under his leadership, the Babbidge ILL Department was named "Interlibrary Loan Department of the Year" by NELINET on three separate occasions-1984-1985, 1991-1992, and 1996-1997. Bob will be remembered by university faculty and students as the man who was always there to help them with their simplest or their most difficult requests. He built countless one-on-one relationships with users and, for many, he was often their first and last resort when seeking hard-to-find documents. His vision for excellent service extended to his colleag!ues as well, and he always had time to help a fellow staff member with a difficult citation. It is unlikely that anyone knows UConn's 2.5 volume collections more thoroughly; if a volume could be found, he found it. Bob will be sorely missed, but we congratulate him on his retirement and wish him the very best in the years ahead.
Richard Bleiler's new Reference Guide to Mystery and Detective Fiction (1999) has received glowing reviews, including these words from professor James Harner in the upcoming 4th edition of the Literary Research Guide-"It's an outstanding bibliography with refreshingly frank evaluations...a model that should be emulated by future volumes in this series," and these from the October 1 Library Journal review, "Another outstanding guide to genre fiction from someone who has authored many." Richard is a reference/liaison librarian in Babbidge Library.
Betsy Hoagg, reference and liaison librarian in the Babbidge Library, has resigned to accept a position at Lake Sumter Community College, in Clermont, Florida, where she will be planning a new library on a new campus. No one has done more than Betsy to make service to all library users the number one priority on our agenda. Betsy first came to UConn in 1988 as a temporary librarian in the Pharmacy Library. She went on to work as a reference librarian, an information desk assistant and the director of the Torrington campus library before stepping into her most recent assignment. Betsy established the Libraries' undergraduate outreach program, which led to the establishment of a consistent library presence in the residence halls and in the special programs aimed at introducing undergraduates to life at UConn. Betsy set a new standard for outreach to the community, one that will serve her well in her new job and that will continue to inspire her colleagues at UConn.
Astrid Terman, circulation systems applications librarian in Access Services, is a member of the team responsible for implementing the new HOMER system. She was inadvertently omitted from the picture and story that appeared in the September/October issue of UConn Libraries.
Elsa Arnett-Conley resigned her position as manager of Babbidge Library's administrative office in October to take a position as program director for the Hartford Conservatory. Elsa coordinated the library's Volunteer Program and led the Student Employment Team as well as serving on a number of other library committees and teams. We wish her the best.
