UConn's Digital Collections: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I copy an image or file (text, audio or video file, etc.)?
The answer to this question will depend upon the nature of the digital collection in question, whether or not the university owns the copyright to specific materials, and whether or not the intended use of the materials falls within the “fair use guidelines” for educational purposes. In general, materials from a UCL-owned digital collection may be used for personal or educational purposes. However, they cannot be reproduced for commercial purposes, transmitted in any way, or compiled for re-use without the permission of the identified copyright holder.
Can I use an image or file (text, audio or video file, etc.) for my college research paper?
Yes. In general, materials from a UCL-owned digital collection may be used for personal or educational purposes. Users are encouraged to properly cite the materials’ owning institution. See the guidelines for citing a UCL digital collection below.
If I want to get permission to use an image or file (text, audio or video file, etc.) for a commercial purpose, whom should I contact?
Contact the individual institution or staff member for advice on copyright requirements and/or restrictions if you wish to use materials found in a UCL digital collection.
Can I obtain a reproduction of an image or file (text, audio or video file, etc.) found in one of your digital collections?
The answer to this may depend upon the condition of the material and whether or not UCL owns the right to reproduce the work. Contact the individual institution or staff member for further assistance.
How can I properly cite an image (text, sound, video, etc.) in one of your digital collections?
See the guidelines for citing a UConn digital collection.
