I have been asked to look in to distance learning through Interlibrary Loan. These questions are more to the academic libraries, but anyone can jump in. How do you handle distance learners ILL requests? Do you have a set policy or do you handle them on a case by case basis? I am interested in two types of distance learners a. Students enrolled at your institution and is presently live in another city (over 50miles away), state or country? b. Students presently living in your area and are distance learners from at another institution in a city (over 50miles away), state or country? 1. Does your library contact a library in a location near where your student is presently located and make arrangements for the student to pick up their material there? 2. Does the student make arrangement with a library that they have access to where they are presently located? 3. If there is not a library available that will agree to received material for the student, how do you handle this? 4. If you have to ship the material directly to the student, who pays the cost for the returning of the material to you, the home institution's library? When I say material, I am referring to books, microfilms, microfiches, films and videos. 5. Help!!!!! Please answer off the list and thanks for all your help. First, I have a new Dell machine with Windows XP. I got it in July, so it's pretty state of the art or close to it. In August I had a mail glitch similar to this one, but I thought it was possible that either the IT department had remotely restored my hard drive or that I had accidentally triggered something similar. It was a new machine and a new OS, so I figured it had to be my fault (too many years of talking to tech support). I only lost a month's worth of e-mail (mid July to August -- a very slow period), so no big deal. Yesterday, I was working with OCLC processing ILL requests. I had Ariel, Clio, Clio Request, Netscape 7 and Netscape 4.79 all open and working. I use both Netscapes because OCLC requires version 7, but my primitive ILL request web page won't work with version 7, so I have to use 4.79 for creating patron web requests. I had just finished processing a patron web request -- my more phobic patrons come to me for help typing the info in and sending the form. I have the web form info directed to two accounts -- the ILL e-mail account (for sending confirmations/troubleshooting messages to patrons) and the Clio e-mail account (for importing to Clio Request). I checked Netscape 7 to make sure the request had been sent, then went back to processing loans. As I was scanning and sending an Ariel document, Ariel froze. I tried to cancel the send. Nothing happened, I ended up doing Ctrl-Alt-Del and trying to shut down Ariel that way. It didn't work. My first "blue screen of death" with Windows XP popped up. (I had begun to hope that Microsoft had finally gotten their act together and I was never going to see another "blue screen of death" ever again. Foolish me!) When I rebooted, Ariel couldn't find the scanner, so I rebooted again. This time everything booted okay. However, when I went back into Netscape 4.79, it had a corrupt user prefs file message. No problem. I simply went to my backup setting from when I changed computers and got that 4.79 prefs file and replaced it. I can't do the same thing with Netscape 7 because I didn't know the system had changed and lost all my Netscape 7 settings when I got my new computer. However, when I went in Netscape 7 and looked at my mail -- the missing month of e-mail had appeared and all my September e-mail was gone, including a Free Ariel customs holding group addition, Lloyd Peterson's Free LVIS AV custom holdings update, and 17 patron ILL requests. Today, when I went back into both programs, I got the same corrupt prefs file message. I have thought about going back to 4.79 to do e-mail, but it seems like version 7 strips everything out when it converts because I have no address books anymore. Basically, I am in a whale of a mess. Has anyone else had this or a similar problem? I don't understand how the missing e-mail can disappear and then reappear like that unless it is those hidden version 7 files. I seem to have accidentally lost the connection once, made a "new" connection, lost the "new:" connection and accidentally found the "old" files. Should I go back to using Netscape 4.79 mail and forget about version 7? Any help or advice would be appreciated. I just set up a new computer for our ILB folks and it went well except that now borrowing straps don't print. We get the following error message: ---quote--- Error in Bor Update Unload 3075 function isn't available in expressions in query expression 'Date()' ----end quote--- Print bookstraps is checked both in Preferences and on the Update records page. I've unchecked and rechecked them. We do have a message typed in and ready to go, but, after updating Received - Loans and then Return.(ing) to Borrowing Menu, no printing happens. Clio version is 2.0b. We have MS Office 2000 Professional on the computer (this doesn't include Access 2000.) and the operating system is Windows XP. All MS Updates are in place. The login has administrative privileges. The installed printer (an HP 1200 networked printer) works with other programs. The Clio database seems OK since I can do the Updates at another computer (Windows NT 4.0) and the bookstraps print out fine. We looked at the computer's Regional/Date/Short format settings to see if they differed from what wanted to print on the bookstrap, but they agreed (MM/dd/yyyy) I have sent for the archives of this list so as to search them for accounts similar to this situation, but in the meantime (and time can be pretty mean when ILB's production flow is interrupted ;-) any suggestions will be gratefully received. Will someone out there in CLIO Requestland do me a big favor? I am having problems getting my old ILL form changed over to our new web page system. I am going from an old javascript form to some kind of ISP-based thing that puts exra crap in the message. I am also having a problem getting information to read correctly into nmy new CLIO update. Fields are not integrating properly. When I set up the old form, I did a lot of revamping of my data field names. I want to take them back to the original field names and I need some help. I don't remember changing any of CLIO's data field names, but things are not importing properly, so I want to go back and get everythiing set up exactly as the default. If you haven't made any changes to CLIO Request,, would you please, please, please go into CLIO Request (3.5d = my version), click on OPTIONS, then SETUP EMAIL FIELD NAMES. A spread sheet/database window will pop up with two rows of data. If you click on the top leftmost block, it will select all data. Then go up to the Taskbar menu, choose EDIT and COPY. Then paste the table into an e-mail message for mailto: psclib1@pscvax.wvnet.edu and send it to me. Thanks for your help. Linda -- Linda Celet Bane Interlibrary Loan (PWS/PWSA) Mary F.
