Your UConn ID is your library card. Use it to charge out books at any library Circulation Desk. The loan period for books is 30 days for undergraduates, and 180 days for faculty, staff, and graduate students. Students may charge out up to 150 books at any one time; graduate students, staff, and faculty may charge out 300 books. More information.
Renew my checkouts?
Within HOMER "Renew books/view account" from the toolbar; log in with your UConn NetID, and a list of Items Checked out will be displayed. Place a check next to the titles you wish to renew, and click "Renew Items". More information.
Request materials from another UConn library?
Undergraduates may use Homer to have books owned by other UConn libraries sent to their campus. In the Homer record for the book, select the Request from another UConn campus button from the toolbar. After entering your name and UConn NetID, select from the pull-down menu which campus you'd like the book sent to. The requested book arrives at your campus in just a few days, and you will be notified via your official UConn e-mail address when the book has arrived.
Graduate students, faculty and staff must use the Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan (DD/ILL) service to request books from other campuses. Anyone requesting a copy of an article from a journal owned by another campus' library should also use DD/ILL.
Borrow materials from a non-UConn library?
Interlibrary Loan is a free service available for UConn students, faculty, and staff. Interlibrary Loan obtains materials - books, articles, dissertations, patents, proceedings, etc. - for research use from other libraries within the state, the country, and around the world. Requests are processed daily, and many materials arrive within several working days. For further information contact the Babbidge Interlibrary Loan Office at 860.486.4959, or any of the special or regional libraries.
Recall a book checked out to another user?
After locating the book you wish to recall in Homer, select the Recall this item button on the toolbar. After entering your UConn NetID, select "Recall." You will be notified via e-mail when the book has been returned. Please contact Circulation Services at 860-486-2518 or email askcirc[at] uconn.edu with questions about this process.
Check my library record?
HOMER can display the list of books you have charged out, and when they're due back at the library. In HOMER select "Renew books/view account"; log in with your UConn NetID and a list of Items Checked out will be displayed.
Many of the research databases licensed by the library are specialized indexes to journal articles in a particular field. After browsing the database locator to find the library database(s) that most closely pertain to your field of research, a search of the database will likely yield a list of journal article citations - including article title, journal title, volume, issue, page numbers, etc. See Research Quickstart online.
Alternately, begin with a general-purpose, full text journal database such as Academic Search Premier or Academic OneFile - both indexing thousands of academic journals and popular magazines and reproducing approximately one-third of cited articles in full text.
Know if UConn owns or has online access to a particular journal?
Search HOMER using a Journal Title search to determine the Libraries' holdings of a particular journal in print OR electronic format.
Cite sources?
UConn students are responsible under the Student Code, Part VI on Academic Integrity, for acknowledging the research and ideas of others, knowing what plagiarism is, and creating accurate bibliographies or "works cited" lists. Whenever you use the quotes or thoughts of others in your own papers, you must indicate where you found them. Each citation should include enough information so that the reader can easily track down the material. More information about citing sources can be found on the library's Citing Sources page.
Request that the library purchase a book?
How do I request that the library purchase a book? Please complete the online Request a Purchase form.
Computing
Connect my laptop inside the library?
Wireless internet access is available throughout the Homer Babbidge Library, as well as a number of free public data jacks.
Connect to library databases and e-journals from home?
Most of the Libraries' licensed research databases and electronic journals can only be accessed off-campus by current UConn students, faculty and staff. You will be automatically prompted for your NetID and password when connecting to these resources from off-campus.
Use public data jacks in the library?
Public data jacks in the library are managed by
UITS (University Information Techology Services).
Users should contact the
UITS Help Desk
at 486-HELP for assistance in connecting to the network, computer
configuration questions, or other PC problems.
Data jacks lit for standard Ethernet are located on Levels 2, 3 and 4 along the perimeter
(including Research Studies); on Level 1, against the Low Vision Room wall;
and on the Plaza level, in the Reserve Room.
Users connecting to public jacks need an Ethernet card and standard
Ethernet cable. Both can be purchased at the Co-op.
Machines using a modem will need an active voice connection. Voice
jacks in the public areas are not lit. Research study users should
contact Telecommunications to arrange a phone line in their own name.
Users connecting to the network via public jacks will not have the
ability to print to public laserprinters on Level 1 due to technical
restrictions.
Further questions concerning public data jack information should be
directed to Rick O'Toole at 486-4776.
Self-service printing, copying, and free scanning are all available in the Learning Commons whenever the Library is open. Printing and Copying are payable by OneCard (Students, Faculty, and Staff), Department Cards, and the new Library Services Card. Poster Printing is also available at the Learning Commons Desk, and accepts Transfer Vouchers as an additional form of payment.
The Library Services Card allows Library users unaffiliated with the University to use any of our public printers and copiers while paying the same price as UConn affiliates. The card costs $5.00 and comes pre-loaded with $2.00. This card is available for purchase in the Learning Commons at the 'Husky Bucks' machine and can also be refilled with additional funds in $1 increments at this location.
