Dr. Richard had a lifelong love of books and libraries and left specific instructions that his personal library of over 2000 books and 350 sound recordings be left to the UCONN Stamford library. In addition, a cash bequest is being used for the acquisition of literary journals. An anonymous donor has established the Jeremy Richard endowment fund. Additional sums have been added that will be used to expand the library's holdings in accordance with plans set forth in discussions between Ms. Carmel O'Neill, director of the library, and Dr. Richard.
Professor Richard was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marcel Richard of Dover, New Hampshire and Largo, Florida. He received his B.A. cum laude from Harvard College, and M.A. from the University of Toronto, and then returned to Harvard to earn a second M.A. before receiving his Doctorate in English. Prior to becoming Associate Professor of English at UCONN, Dr. Richard was instructor and lecturer at Harvard, director of that college's Summer Writing Program, and assistant archivist at the Fogg Museum
In a memo to the UCONN Stamford faculty and staff, Dr. Joel Blatt, speaking on behalf of the faculty, said of Jeremy Richard: "He was a fine colleague and devoted friend to faculty and staff, assisting them in many ways, always with grace, generosity, and a delightful wit. Students responded to him with great affection, sensing that he was a teacher who cared about them." Jeremy Richard was an inspired and inspiring teacher. One faculty member said that the saddest thing about the loss of Dr. Richard is that there are generations of students who are not going to have the experience of having him for a teacher.
