Archives of Nursing Leadership

A Collaboration between the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center and the UConn School of Nursing

About the Archive

The Archives acquires, preserves and makes accessible the papers and records of Connecticut organizations that support the nursing profession and the personal papers of individuals who have made a significant contribution to nursing within the state.

The Archives offer an extraordinary opportunity to bring together in one location significant Connecticut history-of-nursing collections. Materials are available to both graduate and undergraduate nursing students at the University of Connecticut and are generally available for use by the scholarly community at large.

The School of Nursing

The University of Connecticut School of Nursing, founded in 1942, established the first baccalaureate program in nursing at a public university in Connecticut. Currently, the school serves over 600 students in baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral programs in nursing. Its nationally prominent faculty includes more than thirty nurse educators, three of whom are nurse historians.

The School supports the Center for Nursing Research which, combined with the Archives of Nursing Leadership in the Dodd Research Center, provides a rich environment for faculty and student research. The educational programs of the two centers are designed to assist doctoral and master's level students to work with primary research materials, and to provide creative learning opportunities for undergraduate honors students. Students working with the archives have the opportunity to prepare exhibitions and to work as interns processing nursing collections.

A listing of the collections in the Archives of Nursing Leadership at the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center, with links to their finding aids, is available here.
