These descriptions help researchers select appropriate databases depending on their needs. Descriptions indicate if full text is included. Shortcuts to most databases appear in the Databases menu in blue sidebar on the left. Most subscription databases are only available to the UConn community (unless marked as "free"). Music Databases

  • Concise Oxford Dictionary of Music (Oxford Reference Online) Also includes The Oxford Dictionary of Dance, The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Opera, Who's Who in Opera, and The Concise Oxford Companion to the Theatre. In addition, this resource has language, grammar, and subject dictionaries. See complete list of titles.

  • Garland Encyclopedia of World Music Online Access is restricted. Click for more information. Contains in-depth essays on distinct musical cultures. Also available in print format at ML 100 G16 1998 Music Ref. Volumes are grouped by geographic region (Africa, Southeast Asia, etc.), with detailed indexes in the paper volumes. (Unlike most encyclopedias, the articles are not in alphabetical order by topic.) Each volume includes an accompanying CD recording in the rear pocket.

  • Grove Music Online. Standard and largest comprehensive music encyclopedia in English. (Is online equivalent of the print Grove Dictionary of Music & Musicians, 2nd edn. Includes full-text articles on musical terminology, history, theory, practice, people (e.g., composers, performers, printers, librettists, scholars, etc.), styles, places, etc. Includes searchable works lists and bibliographies, as well as visual examples and sound clips. Second edition published December 2000; 29-volume print equivalent available at ML100 .N48 2001 Music Ref.
  • International Index to Music Periodicals (IIMP)  Descriptions and summaries of music journal articles. Topics include scholarly studies, applied music, reviews, and popular topics, plus feature music articles and obituaries appearing in the New York Times and the Washington Post. Good abstracts and subject headings (only for 1996 onward). Updated monthly. Includes non-English language.

    • Current file: 1996-present; 375 periodicals; includes subject headings and abstracts.
    • Retrospective file: pre-1996; 142 periodicals, some from inception; citations only.

  • JSTOR Full-text electronic backfiles of core scholarly journals, including 38 music titles. Coverage starts with the journal's first volume, but excludes the most recent three to five years. (This protects the publisher's subscriptions and revenue opportunities; read about JSTOR's moving wall. Search UConn's eJournal Locator to find databases that have more recent full-text coverage.) JSTOR also includes articles on music appearing in non-music journals, which are especially useful if you are researching socio-econo-historical contexts.

    • JSTOR Music Collection (printable PDF description with list of the original 32 journals)
    • Warning: JSTOR only has the full text of three dozen journals. It omits hundreds of others. Do not rely on it exclusively!

  • Music Index 1976-present (electronic version). Comprehensively indexes most (i.e., 640+) scholarly, applied, music education, and popular music periodicals. Indexes letters and other critical details. Citations only (no summaries); broad subject headings. Includes non-English language. See print version of Music Index for complete coverage (1949-present) at Music Ref. ML 118 .M84. See list of journals indexed.
  • Naxos Music Library Provides nearly complete audio access to more than 5,500 CDs, 80,000 tracks, of primarily classical music, as well as some jazz and world/folk music from the Naxos, Marco Polo, and Da Capo recording labels, plus selected titles from other labels. Naxos uses Windows Media Player (Mac and PC compatible) embedded in a simple Web interface to stream audio at near-CD quality (64K broadband). Instructions for use are at http://blc.naxosmusiclibrary.com//sharefile/UserInstructions.htm. Instructors who wish to create playlist or link to specific tracks should contact the music librarian for instructions.

    • Note to off-campus users: access to Naxos has been more reliable when listeners use the proxy account, rather than VPN. This is true for both Mac and PC users. VPN and Naxos combined is not working for Mac users (let us know if it works for you; log into the VPN to test). Here is information about setting up your proxy account.
  • RILM Abstracts (EbscoHost) 1967-present. Describes and summarizes scholarly writings on music and related disciplines. Updated monthly. Indexes periodical articles, essays, Festschriften, dissertations, books, scholarly reviews, etc. Broad, international coverage, including non-English language. Print equivalent (1967-1998) is at ML 118 R48.

    • About RILM -- detailed scope, titles covered, etc.
    • Journal titles indexed in RILM
    • RILM Classifications -- use these to limit by category (e.g., musicology, pedagogy, theory)
    • RILM Publication Type Codes -- use these to limit by pub type (e.g., article, dissertation)
    • How to Search RILM (PDF) -- older FirstSearch guide. Concepts still apply. Searches are obsolete.
    • Field tags (e.g., ti=title, au=author, so=source, py=publication year, etc.): see "Database Help" in RILM (these can be helpful when searching). Another database vendor (CSA) has a good RILM fact sheet, though some field codes may differ.

Multi-Disciplinary or General Interest Databases

The following resources index several (but not all) music periodicals. Why use them?

    • They often contain full-text articles.
    • Coverage is often more up-to-date than the music databases.
    • They help identify music articles in non-music journals.

Be careful:

    • Many music journals are NOT indexed in the general databases.
    • Coverage may be scantier, especially for older years.
    • Subject terminology is not written by music specialists.
    • Full-text titles come and go.

  • Academic OneFile (formerly InfoTrac) 1980s-present (dates may vary). Describes, summarizes, and includes a good amount of full text for scholarly journal articles and popular magazines covering many fields in the arts, humanities, sciences, social sciences, and general interest; ; includes newswires and full indexing of The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and Christian Science Monitor.

  • Academic Search Premier (Ebsco) Multidisciplinary magazine & journal database provides the full text of over 4,500 journals and magazines, and indexes over 8,000 journals in all disciplines. Topics include news and current events, politics, literature, communication science, business, medicine, psychology, and many more. Includes full text to at least 25 music journals, and indexes some additional music journals. Does not describe nearly as many music journals (and their articles) as IIMP, Music Index, RILM, etc., but is often more up-to-date.

  • Arts & Humanities Citation Search (FirstSearch) Identifies articles cited by an author, or articles that cite a given author. Allows title and subject searching. Drawn from 1,300+ of the most frequently cited arts and humanities journals. 1980-present. Updated weekly.

  • Arts & Humanities Citation Search (Web of Science) Another electronic version of the Arts & Humanities Citation Index (see description above). 1994-present.
  • InfoTrac OneFile -- See Academic OneFile (above))

  • JSTOR (This is a repeat from the Music section above.) Provides full-text electronic backfiles of core scholarly journals, including 36 music titles. Coverage starts with the journal's first volume, but excludes the most recent three to five years (this protects the publisher's subscriptions and revenue opportunities; read about JSTOR's moving wall; search UConn's eJournal Locator to find databases that may have more recent full-text coverage). JSTOR also includes articles on music appearing in non-music journals, which are especially useful if you are researching socio-econo-historical contexts.

    • JSTOR Music Collection (printable PDF description with list of the original 32 journals)
    • Warning: JSTOR only has the full text of three dozen journals. It omits hundreds of others. Do not rely on it exclusively!

  • Project Muse Full text articles to humanities and social sciences journals (the recent issues), including Computer Music Journal, Notes, Leonardo, Latin American Music Review, Asian Theatre Journal, Camera Obscura, Cinema Journal, Discourse, PAJ, TDR/The Drama Review, Theater, Theatre Journal, Theatre Topics, and Wide Angle.
