Can't Find it on the Shelf?

Library materials are sometimes not found on the shelves for a number of reasons (e.g., call number and/or location written or read incorrectly, misshelving by patrons and/or staff, item is checked out, item is lost, etc.).

What To Do

Step 1: Double check the call number, item location, and status in HOMER.
Is the item checked out or marked "lost"? Did you mistranscribe the call number or misread your handwriting? Did you note the correct location? People often fail to notice that the item is shelved in the Babbidge Library or Music reference, miniature scores, oversized, etc.

Step 2: Check the shelf again. Are you in the correct location? Scan for misshelvings.
People often go to the wrong location (e.g., oversized instead of regular stacks). Also, check materials in the general vicinity, in case materials are misshelved. Consider checking your call number in "wrong" locations (e.g., reference, min scores, oversized, etc.).

Step 3: Ask for assistance.
Desk attendants can check the reserve and hold shelves for you. Also, you might have misread HOMER, or may need help navigating the stacks. Staff may have other strategies.

Step 4: Fill out a Search Request Form.
Ask the desk attendant for the form. You will be notified if the item is found. If it is not found, at least the library will have a record of the missing item.
