Digital Audio Reserve: Information for Instructors

Digital Audio Reserve (DAR) provides streamed audio access to music owned by the University Libraries or the faculty member through HuskyCT (formerly Vista/WebCT). Because this service is labor intensive, the library can accommodate only selected courses, and faculty must submit requests several weeks in advance of need.

Instructors will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Check deadlines and feasibility. Consult with Music/Drama Library's access services supervisor about your course. Also consult the DAR copyright policy (PDF) for materials that may or may not be included in DAR.

  2. Submit a request list. If your course is accepted, send the library a list that includes composers (or artist, if more appropriate), composition titles, CD call numbers, and track numbers). Email, Word, or Excel attachments are fine. Arrange a time to drop off personal recordings. If the library does not own the recordings, consult the music librarian about purchase requests.

  3. Request a HuskyCT site. Follow the instructions for requesting a HuskyCT site for your class. (Do this right away.) A form for restoring previous courses is at that same link.

  4. Give library staff editing privileges for your site. As soon as you have your HuskyCT site, add library staff as "section designers" for each section so staff can upload materials. (Ask library staff for their NetIDs). Use HuskyCT's gradebook to add and remove members. Include both the access services supervisor and the music librarian, since one serves as backup to the other.

  5. Learn more about HuskyCT. HuskyCT automatically adds students to your courses, but consult HuskyCT Help for Instructors for more information.

  6. Check all links. You will be notified when course materials have been uploaded. Check all links to ensure that (1) files play back, (b) the correct descriptive information scrolls by during playback, and (c) the correct audio selections plays back. Notify the library of any problems.

  7. Get our handout. The library has a one-page instruction handout that you can distribute to students. Just inquire.

Note: the library generally puts the physical CD on reserve as a backup in case DAR is unavailable for technical reasons. Please help students understand that they are responsible for knowing library hours and for completing their listening assignments in a timely manner. Note that audio clips are available only to students enrolled in the participating course, and that reproducing or distributing clips is prohibited.
