Image Research for Theater

This page assumes that you have already done some background research on your play, playwright, place, and time period. (This helps you identify major ideas, concepts, themes, metaphors, dramatic images, visual ideas, etc.)

I. Consult research guides to learn more about image research.

II. Identify artists and events from your play or playwright's time period.

Strategy 1: consult general chronologies and histories.
Strategy 2: consult art histories.

III. Find art reproductions (including painting, sculpture, illustrations, and photographs).

Strategy 1: browse the art books (OK for general ideas, but imprecise and time consuming).
Strategy 2: find books about your artist in HOMER (they'll have reproductions).
Strategy 3: consult art indexes (they identify reproductions in anthologies).
Strategy 4: look for reproductions online. See line V below.

IV. Find images in books about specific topics (e.g., place, period, person, occupation, etc.).

Strategy 1: find books containing images (add visual terms to your HOMER searches).
Strategy 2: search HOMER for pictorial works (picture books) on any topic (e.g., Russia).
Strategy 3: use subject headings to narrow your HOMER searches.
Strategy 4: you can also find images in magazine or journal articles.

V. Find images online.

Strategy 1: search library databases containing images (the library subscribes to these).
Strategy 2: search the Web for images (this link has starting points and strategies).

VI. Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: How do I identify images depicting "moods," themes, or concepts (e.g., anger, birth)?
Q2: How do I find art and artists if I have a time and place, e.g., 18th-century American?
        Answer: see chronologies and art history books in section II above, then go to III.
Q3: How do I find an art reproduction in a book? Answer: see III.2 and III.3 above.
