Images Depicting Moods or Concepts

It is relatively easy to find known artworks, as well as pictures of objects or people. It is more challenging finding images that depict moods or concepts (aside from browsing the art books). The resources below specialize in "concept" or mood searches.

• Associated Press Multimedia Archive -- This database contains current photos and a selection of pictures from AP's 50 million image print and negative library. Covers virtually all major news events photographed from the 1840s to within minutes of an event occurring today. Read the online Help to find some powerful search features, including concept (e.g., concept:grief) or color searching. Here are other library databases containing images.

• Encyclopedia of Comparative Iconography: Themes Depicted in Works of Art. By Helene E. Roberts. Art Ref. N 7560 E53 1998 v.1-2. This book is located in the Art & Design Library's Reference section. It identifies art works that depict specific moods, concepts, or themes (e.g., sadness, anger, birth, etc.). Look up your theme, jot down the artists and work titles, then find reproductions by using the other art indexes (e.g., World Painting Index), library databases, or Web resources. DRAM 108 students should have a green handout (distributed in class) that gives examples and instructions.
