Citing
New Grove Online
Students, researchers, and other writers should adhere to the citation
styles assigned by their instructors or editors.
Guides
Below are some resources to assist with citing New Grove.
And for the Truly Committed . . .
Below is further commentary that was written when Grove Online was
first issued. (Some issues have been resolved, but there is still useful
info below.)
Note that
these two sources give different citation formats. New Grove Online
presents several problems. First, the title is not clear. Is it The
New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 2nd Edition? GroveMusic?
New Grove Online? www.grovemusic.com? It is very difficult finding a
publication/last updated date. Include editor as usual? The URLs are
long search strings--very impractical yet necessary. Volume numbers
are no longer valid, and there are no columns; it's more important than
ever to add section names to get users closer to the info.
One could
also use the following citation formats (based on CMS). (These were
originally devised as temporary "fixes" until more permanent
guidelines appeared.)
Article
Author, "Article Title," in Dictionary Title Update date,
(date accessed), section of multisection article.
Davies,
Hugh, "Microphone," in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and
Musicians, 2nd edn, January 2001 <http://www.grovemusic.com>
(7 February 2001).
I
omitted the editor above and used the incomplete URL (not recommended).
The full URL is http://www.grovemusic.com/grovemusic/script/search.asp?section=48315&mode=do
c_text&cur_doc=1&session=WXOXPTZNWGNF&handle=125555
Another
example:
Smither,
Howard E., "Oratorio," in The New Grove Dictionary of Music and
Musicians, 2nd Edition, ed. Stanley Sadie, January 2001 <http://www.grovemusic.com/grovemusic/script/article.asp?section=20397.8>
(7 February 2001), 8. Handel and the English Oratorio.
Here
I added the editor, treated the edition as part of the title (as
seen in Grove's website), used the correct URL (it's shorter than
others), and referred to specific section in the article. Probably
could add paragragh number. Other details also need ironing out.
Here
is general information about citing online resources:

Take
a look at the other styles guides. APA yields somewhat clearer citations:
Davies,
Hugh (2001). Microphone. The New Grove Dictionary of Music and
Musicians, 2nd Edition. Retrieved February 7, 2001 from the
World Wide Web: http://www.grovemusic.com
Smither,
Howard E. (2001). Oratorio (Section 8. Handel and the English Oratorio).
The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, 2nd Edition,
ed. Stanley Sadie. Retrieved February 7, 2001 from the World Wide
Web: http://www.grovemusic.com/grovemusic/script/article.asp?section=20397.8
Good
luck with your citations!
