Scores (Printed Music)
Table of Contents
Most of UConn's musical scores are housed in the Music
& Dramatic Arts Library (in the Fine Arts Complex). They are listed
in HOMER, the library catalog.
Best HOMER
Search Strategies
|
Note: for music score searching, it is
best to AVOID the Author and Title searches.
|
Option 1: Keyword Boolean Search
- Good for mixing terms or trying various word forms.
- Allows limiting by format.
- Good for songs or works with distinctive titles.
- Not as good for generic form titles (e.g., sonatas).
Quick Search Instructions
Option 2: Prolific Author/Composer Search
- Provides well-sorted list of a composer's musical works.
- Has cross references to "alternative" titles.
- Very effective for "form" titles (such as sonatas or symphonies),
musical works that are known by many titles, or works that have many
versions or arrangements (e.g., full and vocal scores, operas with
excerpted arias, arrangements, etc.).
Quick Search Instructions
Both searches are very useful.

Music on CD-ROM
UConn has some printed music on CD-ROM (PDF format). The regular score
searches described above and in the Finding
Music guides will also find music on CD-ROM.
To browse records for all the CD-ROMs, go to HOMER
and do a Keyword Boolean search on "CD Sheet Music"
(type the quotes). Add and [composer] if desired.
Example: "CD Sheet Music" and schubert

Music in Collected Sets & Anthologies
Finding
Music (#6): Anthologies & Sets (PDF) -- Many musical scores
are printed in anthologies or large, multi-volume sets. The anthology
or set names may appear in HOMER, but the individual works do not. This
guide shows you how to use music indexes to identify music in large
sets or anthologies.

Scores at Other Libraries
Scores are often available at other libraries. You may be able to drive
to a local library, or the library's Document Delivery / InterLibrary
Loan (DD/ILL) service may be able to borrow one for you. To use DD/ILL
you will need a complete citation. Here are options:
- WorldCat
--
This database lists the holdings of thousands of other libraries.
Use WorldCat to get the citation. If you find a score you like,
click on the ILL link (InterLibrary Loan) in WorldCat to
request a loan from another library. You can also use Document
Delivery / InterLibrary Loan to get scores. (See a librarian
the first time you do this.)
WorldCat is also useful for "sleuthing" (e.g., identifying
a musical work's composer, alternate titles, numbers, or the larger
work in which it may belong) or identifying sound recordings for
purchase.
- Other
Music Libraries or Other
Library Catalogs -- Consult a local library.
- Google is another fast way to
find other libraries or scores (for purchase).
