Homer's Rapid Retrieval
|
The UConn Document Delivery / Interlibrary Loan (DD/ILL) office supports Homer's Rapid Retrieval - a fee-based scanning service available to all members of the Storrs campus community, including faculty, staff and students.
Homer's Rapid Retrieval Service provides materials from the Homer Babbidge Library collections and makes them available electronically in Portable Document Format (PDF). Materials that qualify for this service include: journal articles, conference papers, and chapters from books from either the paper or microform collections housed in the Babbidge Library. All requests for this service may be submitted via the DD/ILL web page. Users log in with their NetID and password and then choose the "Rapid Retreival" menu option. 1. Is this delivery service available to all Storrs-campus faculty, staff members, and students?
Yes, Homer's Rapid Retrieval Service is available to all members of the Storrs campus community, including graduate and undergraduate students. 2. How is Homer's Rapid Retrieval Service different from traditional Document Delivery / Interlibrary Loan services? The DD/ILL office routinely obtains materials in the form of books, journal articles, conference proceedings, videos, CDs, etc., that are not owned by the UConn Libraries for currently enrolled students, faculty and staff. The DD/ILL staff locates needed material and then requests this material from libraries willing to share their circulating collections or photocopy articles from their journals. Homer's Rapid Retrieval Service focuses on providing access to materials located in the Homer Babbidge Library. This service is offered in an effort to assist the Storrs campus community with their research needs by facilitating access to locally held materials. 3. What about materials located in other campus libraries? Homer's Rapid Retrieval service applies only to those qualifying materials housed in the Homer Babbidge Library. 4. How quickly are documents made available? Most documents are scanned and made available on our server within two business days after the receipt of each request when classes are in session. If a user submits numerous requests at one time, every effort will be made to provide documents as quickly as possible. If our staff cannot locate an item on the shelf, the request will automatically turn into a standard interlibrary loan request, with the standard delivery expectations in effect, with the exception of rush requests. 5. What are the fees involved in this service? The fee is $6.00 per complete document plus an additional $0.15 per page (for black and white page scans) or $0.20 (for color page scans). A document may consist of a single journal/periodical article, book chapter, or paper. Fees may be paid with HuskyBucks or a library Department Card. Department Card Account Request Form 6. Why is there a fee for this service? The per document fee is charged in order to help offset the additional labor involved to provide the service. 7. What kind of quality does PDF offer for scanned documents? Excellent! We support color scanning, too. 8. Are longer PDF documents difficult and time-consuming to download? Even larger PDF documents retrieved on campus via the University's LAN are easily accessible. They will download and display in Adobe Reader quickly. If the documents are accessed via DSL or cable modem, there are usually no problems with larger documents. Problems begin when larger documents are downloaded via Internet connections of 56K bps or slower. 9. How do I place a request using Homer's Rapid Retrieval?
Log in with your NetID and password on the DD-ILL web page and then choose
If you select Department Card as your payment option, you will be asked to enter your department card account number:
10. Where can I find more information about the Husky OnceCard or the Department Card?
You can find additional information here: Please contact Amelia Hinchliffe in the Library's Computer and Copy Services department if you have any questions about Department Cards. 11. Can I choose to have paper photocopies provided through this service instead of PDF? No. Materials requested via Rapid Retrieval will be provided only as electronic, PDF documents. PDF documents can be read, saved and printed using the Adobe Acrobat Reader. The Reader can be obtained free of charge here. 12. Can I choose to have PDF documents sent to my email address as attachments? In most cases, the size of the average PDF document we create by scanning is too large and requires a significant amount of email server space. As a result, sending PDF documents as email attachments cannot be supported by this service. 13. What is the difference between the Electronic Document Delivery (EDD) Service and Homer's Rapid Retrieval Service? The Electronic Document Delivery (EDD) service provides Storrs campus users with materials that are not held at any Storrs campus library. The DD-ILL office receives most of these materials from other libraries in electronic format. They are then converted to PDF files. Homer's Rapid Retrieval Service puts Storrs faculty, staff, and students in touch with scanned images of material held by the Homer Babbidge Library. Read more about our Electronic Document Delivery service here. Questions or feedback about the Rapid Retrieval service should be directed to udoc@uconn.edu
