The Virtual Catalog Tour

How to Search The Virtual Catalog

1. Go to the top of the Virtual Catalog Login Page

Click on the "I have a UConn NetID" button and then log in your NetID and password.

2. Click the Search Request button (see the red arrow in Figure 2).

3. Choose an index to search: Title, Author, or ISBN.

The Catalogs to Search box should read, BLC Virtual Catalog (see red arrow in Figure 3). Enter your search terms in the box marked Term (see blue arrow in Figure 3) and click the Begin Searching button (see green arrow in Figure 3).

4. Your search results are displayed beneath a list of Virtual Catalog libraries that own the item you searched. You may have to scroll down the page to see the results of your search.

Clicking on any title in blue text will reveal more about that item. To place a request for a title in the search results, simply click on the Request button next to the relevant title (see blue arrow in Figure 4).

If you wish to initiate a new search, simply click the New Search button (see red arrow in Figure 4).

5. Verify that your name is correct (see blue arrow in Figure 5).

Select a campus Pickup Location (see red arrow in Figure 5). The title will be shipped to this UConn campus library's circulation desk.

The Need By date is set to a 30-day default (see green arrow in Figure 5). If the request is not filled within 30 days, you will receive notification and further instructions via email.

Enter special instructions about your request in the Notes for Librarian to Review (see grey arrow in Figure 5). This box is helpful if you are in need of a specific volume of a title (e.g. volume 4 of a 16-volume set). If you are in need of more than one volume from a multi-volume set, you must place a separate request for each volume needed and mention the volume number in the "Notes for Librarian to Review" box. For example, if you need volumes 3, 6 and 9 from a title that contains 13 volumes, you will need to place a total of three requests. Please note that entering information in the "Notes for Librarian to Review" box may slow down the processing of your request.

Be sure the email address you provide is one you usually use. If it is not, please enter an address that you check often (see black arrow in Figure 5).

Once needed changes have been made on this page, click the Submit Request button (see purple arrow in Figure 5).

6. Your request is confirmed. Record your Request Number (see red arrow in Figure 6) for future reference.

Click on the Search Results button in the sidebar (see blue arrow in Figure 6) to request more titles from your original search.

Click on the New Search button (see green arrow in Figure 6) to initiate a new request.

Click on the Quit button in the sidebar if you are finished.
