Background

Jan Heckman received a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Hawaii-Hilo, which is also where he decided to become not only a librarian but a marine science librarian. Thus he took all the available marine science coursework available to him there at the time. Jan's Masters in Library Science came from the University of Illinois, and after graduation he worked as an intern at the joint Marine Biological Lab/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Library in Woods Hole, MA. Jan then returned to the University of Hawaii-Hilo for another year of marine science course work, as they had developed a marine sciences undergraduate degree during his absence. Before coming to UConn he was the Reference and Electronic Resources Librarian at the Quinney Library at Utah State University. The library specialized in natural resources information to support the Utah State College of Natural Resources.
