Responsibilities

Valerie is responsible for selecting books, journals and electronic resources; providing in-depth research assistance and library and archival instruction for human rights.

Valerie is the advocate within the Library for the following:

  • Research Guide for Human Rights -- Start your research here!-- Includes print and electronic resources available at the University of Connecticut Libraries, as well as films, archival materials, and links to online resources from the United Nations, human rights non-governmental organizations, and other human rights sources.

  • Human Rights Film Collection -- (MS Word document: 66 pages) An alphabetical, annotated listing of over 400 films relating to a variety of human rights themes, including genocide, access to food and water, issues of gender and sexuality, education, labor, and poverty. (Films are located on Level 3 of Babbidge Library.) You can also search for human rights films on HOMER.

  • The Journal of Human Rights is now published at UConn. Click here for online access. (electronic version only available to members of the UConn community.)

  • Human Rights and Alternative Press Collections at the Dodd Research Center -- Information on archival collections at UConn relating to human rights and activist movements.

  • Human Rights Research Blog -- Includes new additions to the collections and updates and information about human rights resources as well as information about human rights events on campus..

Contact Valerie to request any of these services, or for help with any other library-related question or concerns:

Library Instruction - request general orientation, course-related instruction, and focused research training. Group and individual training sessions are available by appointment. For group sessions, please contact the liaison at least 2 weeks in advance.

Research Assistance - request help in selecting appropriate resources, performing database searches, or locating relevant materials at other institutions.

Citation Assistance - request help in verifying citations for publications, bibliographies, or Interlibrary Loan orders.

New Materials Requests - suggest titles to be added to the Libraries' collection.

Background

Valerie Love is Curator for Human Rights and Alternative Press Collections at the Dodd Research Center, and Library Liaison to the Human Rights programs on campus. Valerie holds a B.A. from Smith College and an M.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Previously she worked as the Archivist for the Benjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change, and also as an adjunct instructor of Italian at the University of Memphis. She has also done significant consulting and volunteer work with libraries and archives in Ghana and South Africa. Her research specialties include human rights, civil rights, and LGBTQ studies.
