History

In 1994 Rodney Wilson, a Missouri high school teacher, started the movement to establish a month to recognize the contributions of GLBT persons to our world. Disappointed that textbooks ignored LGBT contributions, Wilson and others worked to establish October as a month to recognize LGBT persons in history. October was chosen since National Coming Out day had already been established on October 11, and the first two GLBT marches on Washington had been held in October of 1979 and 1987.

The following materials listed are a small sampling of the library's LGBTQ collections. For more information about any of the resources listed, please contact Tom Koenig, Catalog Librarian and Liaison to the Rainbow Center, 860.486.4990.

In addition to the resources on GBLTQ history at Babbidge Library, the Rainbow Center on the 4th floor of the Student Union has its own library of over 1,500 books and 400 videos, and is open to all UConn students, faculty and staff. For more information on upcoming GLBTQ-themed programs and events on campus, please consult the Rainbow Center's Events Calendar.
