Writing Center Personal Statements

DATE: Wed, 28 Mar 2012 FROM 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM -- Our Personal Statements workshop focuses on the Personal Statement (or Statement of Purpose) as a genre of writing. Graduate schools, fellowships, grants, and other competitive programs often require each applicant to submit a short essay about her history and goals. These essays are sometimes written in response to very specific questions; sometimes, they're written in response to a generic prompt. In both cases, a good personal statement carefully balances its author's history and aspirations.

This two hour workshop will arm students with the knowledge to craft an effective personal statement for a variety of applications – from graduate school to study abroad programs. The first hour will feature a lecture on the general genre conventions of the personal statement. The second will offer hands on assistance with an experienced tutor with a draft the student brings in.
